Burnley & Pendle - Online across east Lancashire - from £35

Men's counselling
in Burnley & Pendle

East Lancashire is not short of men getting on with it. Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Padiham, Barnoldswick - towns built on work, where the honest answer to “how are you” has been “not so bad” for about four generations.

I work with men across Burnley and Pendle online by secure video or phone, weekends and evenings included subject to availability, payment upfront by bank transfer locks in the meeting date and time. Most men get started within days of the free initial call.

Why online counselling works well in east Lancashire.

For a lot of men round here the nearest private therapy room belongs to someone in a bigger city, which turns a 50-minute session into most of an evening. That is not a scheduling inconvenience. For a man on shifts, or one who has already talked himself out of it twice, it is simply the reason he does not go.

Working online removes the journey rather than the therapy. The session happens in your own front room, in the car on a break, or in the spare room once the house has gone quiet. Same fifty minutes, same therapist, nothing lost to getting there and back.

It also removes the bit men mention most often, which is that nobody watches you walk into a building. In towns this size, that is not paranoia. It is a fair read of how word travels.

What you need for an online session.

A room where you will not be walked in on, and a phone or a laptop. The link comes by email beforehand - nothing to install, no account to set up. If the signal drops the session carries on by phone.

Men counselling men.

Most counsellors in this country are women. That is not a criticism of anyone - plenty of men work well with a female counsellor and never think about it. But if you would rather talk to a man, filtering an east Lancashire directory that way leaves you with very few names. Mettle is a practice built around men, run by one.

What men in Burnley and Pendle bring to counselling.

Work that stopped, or might.

Redundancy, a contract not renewed, a firm winding down. The money is one problem. Being the man who used to provide is a different one, and it lands later.

Drinking that stopped being social.

It rarely arrives as “I have a drink problem”. It arrives as sleeping badly, snapping at people, and a quiet arithmetic about how many it was last night.

Being a father to a pattern you inherited.

Men who want to do it differently from how it was done to them, and who find the old script coming out of their own mouth anyway.

Anger that gets there before the words.

Not violence, usually. A short fuse, a slammed door, an atmosphere in the house - and the shame that follows once it has passed.

There is no counselling room in Burnley, and I will not pretend there is.

Some counselling websites build a page for every town and quietly imply an office in each one. This is not that. There is one Mettle consulting room and it is in Southport, on the other side of the county.

Everything across Burnley and Pendle is done remotely - secure video or phone, sometimes called teletherapy or online therapy, and it is the same work I do in the room. If you specifically want to sit in a room with a counsellor, you would be better served by someone local, and I will happily point you toward how to find one.

Counselling questions men in Burnley & Pendle ask.

Do you have a room in Burnley or Nelson?

+

No. The consulting room is in Southport and everything across Burnley and Pendle is online, by secure video or phone. If sitting in a room matters to you, say so on the free call and I will point you toward finding a counsellor locally rather than talk you into the wrong format.

I work shifts. Can you actually fit around that?

+

Usually, yes. Weekday evenings run to 8pm, Saturday mornings and some Sunday slots exist, and online sessions do not need to be at the same time every week. Bring your rota to the intro call and we can look at it properly.

I am already on an NHS waiting list. Should I wait?

+

That is your call and both can run alongside each other. Some men start here to have somewhere to put it while they wait, then take the NHS place when it comes. Nothing here requires you to give up your position in a queue.

Is online counselling really going to do anything?

+

For most men, yes. The research broadly finds online counselling for men as effective as face-to-face for anxiety, low mood and stress, and many men find it easier to be honest from their own space than from a stranger’s office. If it turns out not to suit you, I would rather find that out in the first session or two than have you sit with it.

Who else can I talk to locally, for free?

+

Andy’s Man Club runs free weekly peer groups for men and needs no referral - a lot of men use it alongside counselling, or instead of it. Their groups page at andysmanclub.co.uk/groups lists what is currently running and is the place to find your nearest. Samaritans and CALM are there any time.
