Terms of Service

Last updated: April 2026

The service

Mettle Counselling and Psychotherapy is a private counselling practice operated by Chris Brotherton (MNCPS Acc.), sole trader, based in Southport, Merseyside. Services include ongoing counselling, Single-Session Therapy (SST), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Counselling is not a medical service and Chris Brotherton is not a medical doctor, psychiatrist, or regulated health professional. If you are in a medical or psychiatric crisis, please contact your GP, call 999, or call the Samaritans on 116 123.

Starting work together

Work begins following a free 15-minute introductory call and an agreed contract. The contract sets out the terms of our working relationship, session frequency, fees, and boundaries. These website terms apply to use of this site and any initial enquiry. The individual contract governs the therapeutic relationship.

Confidentiality

Everything discussed in sessions is confidential. There are three exceptions where confidentiality may need to be broken:

  • Where there is a serious and imminent risk of harm to you or another person.
  • Where a court of law requires disclosure.
  • Where there is reasonable concern about the safeguarding of a child or vulnerable adult.

Where possible, we would discuss breaking confidentiality with you before doing so. Session content is discussed in clinical supervision in anonymised form, as required by the NCPS.

Fees and cancellation

Full details of fees, payment methods, and the cancellation policy are set out in the Payment & Cancellation Policy.

Professional standards

Chris Brotherton is an Accredited Registrant of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) and a member of Addiction Professionals. Practice is governed by the NCPS Ethical Framework. Complaints about professional conduct can be referred to the NCPS at ncps.com.

Website use

This website is provided for information purposes. Content on this site does not constitute clinical advice and should not be treated as such. We make reasonable efforts to keep information accurate but cannot guarantee it is always current or complete.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
