Accessibility Statement

Last updated: May 2026

Our commitment

Mettle Counselling and Psychotherapy is committed to making this website accessible to as many people as possible, including those with disabilities, neurodivergent conditions, and reading difficulties. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

Reading options built into this site

You don’t need to install anything or adjust your operating system. These controls are always available in the navigation bar at the top of every page.

Dark mode / Light mode

Toggle labelled Light or Dark in the navigation bar

Switch between a light background and a dark background at any time. Your preference is saved and remembered across visits. The site defaults to your operating system preference if you have one set.

OpenDyslexic font

Toggle labelled Aa in the navigation bar — also accessible via the menu on mobile

Activating the Aa toggle switches the site font to OpenDyslexic — a typeface specifically designed to improve readability for people with dyslexia. Each letter has a weighted bottom that reduces the chance of rotation and confusion.

Switching to OpenDyslexic also increases body text size slightly, widens line spacing, and increases word spacing — all of which are known to help with reading fluency. Your preference is saved and applied immediately on your next visit without any flash of the wrong font.

What we have done

  • Semantic HTML elements throughout — <main>, <nav>, <header>, <footer>, correct heading hierarchy
  • All images include descriptive alt text
  • Colour contrast meets WCAG AA in both light and dark modes
  • Light and dark mode with operating system preference respected by default
  • OpenDyslexic font toggle — dyslexia-friendly reading mode built in
  • Consistent body text size across all pages
  • Keyboard-navigable interface with visible focus indicators
  • No auto-playing audio or video
  • Crisis support banner permanently visible at the top of every page
  • Quick exit button to leave the site immediately
  • All interactive elements have accessible labels (aria-label where needed)
