Purpose and direction - Southport & online - from £35

Finding purpose
isn't a single answer you're missing

Some men come to Mettle with a clear label for what's wrong - anxiety, grief, burnout. Others come with something harder to name. Life looks fine from outside. Nothing's technically broken. It just doesn't feel like it's going anywhere, or like it's yours.

This page covers what that drift actually is, why it doesn't need a crisis to be worth talking about, and what working through it looks like.

What this tends to look like

  • Going through the motions of a life that used to feel like a choice.
  • Success by every external measure, with no sense of why it should matter.
  • A quiet feeling that you're living somebody else's plan for you.
  • No single trigger - just a slow sense of drift that built up over years.

Why this doesn't need a diagnosis to be worth bringing

A lack of direction isn't a clinical category, and it doesn't need to become anxiety or depression before it's a legitimate reason to talk to someone. Plenty of men wait for it to get bad enough to have a name, when the actual work is available a lot earlier than that.

What counselling can offer here

Space to work out what's actually yours - which parts of the life you built were chosen, and which were inherited, expected, or drifted into. Person-centred work is built for exactly this: following what you bring rather than fitting you to a framework, since there's no checklist for purpose.

This is often slower, less symptom-focused work than anxiety or addiction counselling. That's not a sign it's less serious. Working out what you actually want your life to be about is some of the hardest work there is.

Questions worth asking.

I don't have a specific problem - is this still for me?+
Yes. Not having a single named issue is one of the most common reasons men end up here. You don't need a diagnosis or a crisis to justify the conversation.
Is this the same as a life coach?+
No. A life coach typically works toward goals you already have. This is counselling with an NCPS Accredited Registrant - it can include where you're heading, but it starts with what's actually going on for you, including the parts that don't have a plan yet.
What if I can't explain what's wrong on the first call?+
That's normal, and it's fine. Most men who bring this can only describe the feeling, not the cause. The free 15-minute call is a conversation, not an assessment - you don't need the words ready in advance.

No commitment. No form.

A short conversation to see if this is the right fit for you. If it is, we book a session. If it isn’t, I’ll point you somewhere better.
