Expert by experience. You're the authority on your own life

There is a term that gets used in advocacy and mental health circles. Expert by experience. It means the person living through something holds the ultimate expertise on their own life. Not the clinician. Not the textbook. The person.

It sounds obvious said plainly. But a lot of men walk into therapy expecting the opposite. They expect to be assessed, labelled, and handed a verdict by someone who knows better. Sit down, explain yourself, wait to be told what is wrong with you.

That is not how good therapy works, and it is worth knowing before you start.

You bring something into the room that no qualification can replace. You have lived every day of your own life. You know the history, the pressure, the moment it started to slip, the things you have already tried. That is real expertise. It is not soft or second-rate. It is the most important information in the room.

What a counsellor brings is different. Training in how change happens. A way of getting underneath the surface. The ability to sit with something hard without flinching or rushing to fix it. Useful, but not the same as knowing your life from the inside. The two kinds of expertise work together. Neither one runs the show alone.

This matters for men in particular. A lot of blokes avoid therapy because it feels like handing control to a stranger. Being analysed. Being told who you are. If that is the picture in your head, no wonder you have kept the door shut.

Turn it round. You are not a problem to be diagnosed. You are the authority on your own experience, working with someone whose job is to help you make sense of it and decide what comes next. You set the direction. You say what matters. Nothing gets introduced without your say-so.

Being an expert by experience does not mean you have it all worked out. If you did, you would not be looking for help. It means your account of your own life is taken seriously as evidence, not waved away as overthinking it or being dramatic. What you feel is information. What you have noticed is information. Where it hurts is information.

At Mettle, the work starts from that footing. No diagnosis to earn, no checklist to pass, no expert handing down a label from on high. Just a straight conversation between two people, one who has lived his own life and one trained to help him make use of it.

You already know more than you think. The work is learning to trust it.
