Low self-confidence - Southport & online - from £35

Low confidence
isn't a personality trait

Low self-confidence in men often gets written off as personality - 'that's just how he is.' It isn't. It's usually a pattern, built up over years, and patterns can shift.

This page covers what low confidence actually looks like in men, when it's worth talking to someone, and what working with Chris looks like if you do.

What it actually looks like

Low confidence rarely looks like the stereotype. It's the promotion you didn't go for. The meeting where you had the better idea and said nothing. The relationship where you go along with what everyone else wants because your own preference doesn't feel like it counts.

It's not the same as being quiet, or humble, or easy-going - plenty of confident men are all three. The tell is a gap between what you'd actually choose and what you let yourself have.

Where it usually comes from

Confidence isn't fixed at birth. It's built - or eroded - by what happened when you tried things: whether effort was met with encouragement or criticism, whether mistakes were allowed or punished, whether your voice mattered in the room you grew up in. A lot of men trace it back to one relationship, one period, one comment that stuck.

It doesn't need a dramatic cause. Sometimes it's just years of small signals adding up - never quite good enough, never quite the one who gets picked.

When it's worth talking to someone

  • You hold back an opinion you actually have, most days.
  • You say yes when you mean no, and resent it afterwards.
  • You've turned down something you wanted because you didn't think you'd get it.
  • You compare yourself to other men and always come up short.
  • You're not sure when you started believing this about yourself.

What working with Chris looks like

I'm an NCPS Accredited Registrant working integratively - person-centred as the foundation, with CBT where it's useful for spotting the specific thoughts that keep you small. Some of the work is about where the pattern started. Some of it is more practical - noticing the moment you talk yourself out of something, and building a different response.

There's no confidence-building script or set of exercises to get through. The work follows what's actually holding you back, not a generic programme.

Questions worth asking.

Isn't low confidence just how some people are?+
Some men are naturally more reserved, and that's not a problem to fix. Low confidence is different - it's when you want something and talk yourself out of it, repeatedly, in a way that costs you. That's a pattern, and patterns can shift.
Will this turn me into someone loud and pushy?+
No. Confidence isn't about becoming a different personality - it's about closing the gap between what you'd choose and what you let yourself have. Quiet, confident men exist. That's usually the aim, not a personality transplant.
How is this different from a confidence-building course?+
Generic courses teach general techniques. This is 1:1 counselling built around where your specific pattern came from and what keeps it going - which tends to hold up better than a script memorised for a workshop.
Isn't this the same as self-esteem?+
Related, but not identical - confidence is about believing you can do things; self-esteem is about believing you're fundamentally OK regardless of what you do. See the low self-esteem in men guide for more on that distinction; many men find they're carrying both.
