What's actually underneath
Anger is almost always a second feeling. Something quieter came first - often more vulnerable, and less comfortable to sit with. Counselling helps you slow down enough to spot it, so you can respond to the real thing instead of the loud thing.
Common patterns
- Anger after being criticised → underneath is often shame.
- Anger when a partner pulls away → underneath is often fear of being left.
- Anger at small inconveniences → underneath is often exhaustion or overwhelm.
What working with Chris looks like
Alongside integrative counselling training, I've completed further training in Restorative Approaches - which sits well alongside anger work, because both are about understanding what actually happened underneath a reaction, not just managing the reaction itself. The work is practical - noticing your early warning signs, building what actually helps you, and slowly unpacking the patterns that keep showing up.
This page is about the everyday anger a lot of men carry - the short fuse, the snapping, the regret afterwards. If your anger has become frightening or abusive to someone else, that's a different and more structured piece of work; say so on the free call and we'll talk honestly about what's right for you, including options beyond 1:1 counselling.

Is anger something you can actually work on in counselling, or do I just need to calm down?+
Will you tell me my anger is wrong?+
What if I’m worried I might hurt someone?+
How is this different from an anger management course?+
