Work stress and burnout - Southport & online - from £35

Burnout in men
isn't the same as needing a holiday

Burnout in men often looks like ‘I'm fine, just busy’ - until it doesn't. The tell isn't usually tiredness; it's that the things you used to care about have gone quiet.

This page covers what burnout actually is, why rest alone often doesn’t fix it, and how counselling can help you find your way back to a version of yourself you recognise.

Burnout vs. being tired

Tiredness lifts after rest. Burnout doesn't. You can take a week off and come back feeling exactly the same. That's the tell - your engagement, not your sleep debt, is what's broken.

Common signs

  • Cynicism creeping in about work, people, or the future.
  • Small tasks feeling disproportionately hard.
  • Loss of interest in things you used to look forward to.
  • A body that aches, gets ill more often, or won't sleep properly.

Why counselling helps

Burnout is rarely just about workload. It's usually a mismatch - between what you're spending your life on and what actually matters to you. Counselling gives you space to look at that honestly, and work out what needs to change without blowing your whole life up.

If burnout is tangled up with your workplace specifically - a difficult manager, a culture that never switches off - Mettle also runs a workplace wellbeing service for organisations that want to address this properly at source.

Before you book

Questions worth asking.

I've had time off and I still feel the same. What's going on?+
That’s the classic sign burnout, not tiredness, is the problem. Rest treats sleep debt; burnout is usually about a mismatch between your effort and what actually feels meaningful, which time off alone doesn’t touch.
Do I need to quit my job to recover?+
Not necessarily. Some men do need a bigger change, but plenty recover by changing how they relate to the same job - boundaries, workload conversations, what they say yes to. Counselling helps you work out which one you’re dealing with.
Can my employer find out I’m going?+
No. Private 1:1 counselling at Mettle is completely confidential - nothing reaches your employer. If your organisation has a workplace wellbeing arrangement with Mettle, that’s a separate, opt-in service with its own confidentiality terms.
How many sessions does burnout usually take?+
It varies. Pay-as-you-go from £35 a session means there’s no fixed programme - some men need a handful of sessions to get clarity and a plan, others want ongoing support through a bigger change. You set the pace.
