Free or private men's counselling and how to choose
Most men who contact a private therapist have already thought about the free options. They have looked at NHS Talking Therapies, seen a men's group advertised, maybe been told about a local charity that does counselling. Then they hesitate, because nobody really explains how to choose. So here it is, plainly.
Free and private are not rivals. They do different jobs, and the honest answer is that a lot of men benefit from both at different times.
Start with what the free routes are good at. NHS Talking Therapies is a serious, evidence-based service, and it costs you nothing. Local men's groups and community charities offer something money cannot buy, which is belonging. Sitting in a room with other men who get it, doing something useful together, knowing you are not the only one. If isolation is the core of what is wrong, that kind of support can be the most important thing you do.
What the free routes tend to struggle with is usually three things. The first is waiting. Funded services run on finite capacity, so there is often a queue, sometimes months long, and a referral form and an assessment before anything starts. The second is privacy. A local group means a local venue, in your own town, where you might be seen, and where being a member is part of the model. The third is depth and fit. Group and peer support is broad by design. It is not built around your specific problem, your schedule, or one-to-one work with an accredited therapist.
Private therapy is built for exactly those gaps. There is no referral and no waiting list, so you can usually start within the week. It is available online and UK-wide, so there need be no local venue to walk into and no one to recognise you. And it is structured one-to-one work with an NCPS Accredited Registrant, focused entirely on what you bring. You pay for it, and that is the real trade-off. Private therapy costs money where community support does not.
So how do you choose. A few honest questions sort most of it out.
How long can you wait. If the answer is months, and things are getting worse rather than better, waiting is its own risk. That points toward starting privately, or starting privately while you sit on a free waiting list.
How much does privacy matter. If the thought of being seen walking into a known local venue is enough to stop you going at all, that is not vanity. It is a real barrier, and online private work removes it.
What do you actually need. If you need belonging and connection, a group or community service may be the better fit. If you need focused, confidential work on a specific thing, one-to-one therapy is built for that. Plenty of men do both, a group for the belonging and private sessions for the depth.
None of this is an argument against free support. Use it. It is good, and for a lot of men it is enough. This is just the missing map for the men it is not enough for, or not fast enough for, or not private enough for.
If you are weighing it up and not sure where you land, the simplest next step is a free 15-minute call. No referral, no form, no commitment. We work out whether private therapy is right for you, and if it is not, I will point you toward the free option that fits better.

Why some men talk better when they're walking
The most important conversations a man ever has often don't happen in a therapy room. They happen on a walk, in a car, at a workbench. Here's why that matters.
